      What Powers the FX5

A New 16.6MP full-frame stacked Exmor RS CMOS image sensor combined with a new BIONZ XR2 engine with integrated AI processing allows creators to capture their vision in any light and in any format. For the first time in the Cinema Line FX series, the FX5 supports Open Gate 3:2 recording, ideal for creators delivering in horizontal and vertical formats during the same project. It shoots up to 5K at 60 fps, 4K at 120 fps, and FHD at 240 fps across its scan modes. 15+ Stops of Dynamic Range, Dual Gain, and three base ISO make the FX5 ideal for run-and-gun shooting or working with challenging light.

The FX5 is the sweet spot between FX3A and the larger FX6. Powerful enough for serious cinematographers, mid-level creators, and established freelancers. Versatile enough for future filmmakers and high-level social creators who need a camera they can operate solo and that yields pro-level results.

      Perfect Capture

Never miss a shot with the FX5's AI-powered subject recognition and tracking. This includes Human, Animal, and Bird recognition.

Fast Hybrid AF draws on up to 759 phase-detection points, keeping focus locked onto fast-moving subjects even in dark scenes or with a shallow depth of field.

Sony FX5 Cinema Camera Active Mode

When tracking subjects or making dynamic movements, the improved IBIS with 2x roll correction and Dynamic Active Mode help prevent the "shakey cam" look.

AI-powered ATW (Auto tracing white balance) dynamically adjusts white balance while shooting to keep consistent color in changing light or when moving from environment to environment, an all too common situation for event and wedding professionals.

For those creators who work with Anamorphic lenses, the FX5 can display an internal de-squeeze at 1.3x, 1.5x, 1.6x, 1.8x, and 2.0x.

      Updated Clear Image Zoom (CIZ)

The zoom ring combines optical and digital zoom to keep your zoom smooth.

      Dual Gain

The FX5 has 15+ stops of dynamic range natively, assisted by the new Dual Gain capability. This allows the FX5 to pick up more information in the shadows and reduces noise in dark areas. Three base ISO: 800, 4000, and 12800 offer filmmakers latitude to shoot in any lighting situation and capture beautifully clean shadows.

      Linear RAW with 16-bit X-OCN

Extended tonal range. Original Camera Negative (X-OCN) provides 16-bit scene-linear RAW recording internally. This eliminates the need for an external RAW recorder. LT, C1, and C2 codec options let creators balance image quality, file size, and workflow flexibility to suit the production.

      Color Science and Workflow Flexibility

S-Cinetone brings Sony's cinema color science to the FX5, delivering natural skin tones and a polished look straight out of camera. Creators can choose from three S-Log3 modes: Cine EI, Cine EI Quick, or Flexible ISO. Import up to 16 user LUTs to monitor the intended look while shooting, and wide-gamut S-Gamut3 and S-Gamut3.Cine support makes color matching easier with VENICE 2 on multi-camera productions.

      Monitoring and Exposure Options

Even with 15+ stops of dynamic range, creators still want to nail the perfect exposure while on set. To that end, the Sony FX5 includes: false color, waveform, and histogram. For perfect focus and depth of field monitoring, the FX5 includes Focus Peaking as well as focus mapping.

      Larger LCD

The 3.5-inch wide 16:9, 4-axis multi-angle LCD monitor is a huge step up from the 3.0-inch vari-angle of the FX3/FX30. The BIG6 (HOME) menu system is inherited from Sony's high-end CineAlta cameras. Additionally, while shooting, the LCD's new informational layout keeps the image area clean, while displaying all the information needed.

      Inherited from CineAlta

Beyond the LCD and internal menus, the FX5 has new/streamlined controls when compared to the FX3. Most prominent is the multi-function dial inherited from Sony's CineAlta cameras, supporting both rotational and push operation for faster access to key settings.

      Media and Power

To store all those RAW files, the FX5 has dual combo memory card slots, each accepting either a CFexpress Type A card or an SDXC (UHS-I/II) card, supporting relay, simultaneous, and separated recording. An updated battery, the NP-SA100, gives approximately 105 minutes of actual recording time, or up to 170 minutes of continuous recording (CIPA standard, LCD monitor).

All of this comes in a genuinely compact body: approximately 643g body-only, or 734g with battery and memory card included, at roughly 132.2 x 79.0 x 87.0mm.

      Build and Connectivity

The I/O on the FX5 is designed around working professionals. It has two USB Type-C ports, a full-sized HDMI (Type A), an Ethernet/Lan Port, and both headphone and Microphone jacks (3.5mm). Add to that Tri-band WiFi 2.4GHz/5GHz/6GHz, and you have a camera that fits seamlessly into multicam and streaming workflows in a connected production. Streaming is handled directly over RTMP, RTMPS, or SRT, with no extra hardware required. More locally, you can monitor and control the FX5 wirelessly with a smartphone.

Sony FX5 Cinema Camera build and conectivity

Several 1/4-20 (UNC) screw holes allow for mounting the FX5 or mounting accessories to the FX5.

      Built to Keep Rolling

An efficient fan cooling system keeps the FX5 running through long recording sessions, with three fan modes (Auto, Minimum, and Off in REC) to balance cooling against operational noise. The body is sealed at exterior joints and around the battery cover to help resist dust and moisture, so the FX5 can hold up on demanding sets.

      Optional Accessories

      XLR Handle Unit

Purpose-built for seamless high-end professional audio capture with two XLR/TRS combo inputs, the new XLR-H2 Handle Unit brings up to 96 kHz/32-bit float, 4-channel audio to the FX5, connecting through the Multi Interface (MI) Shoe. Perfect for ever-changing environments, where noise levels can spike at any moment.

Important for existing Sony cinema shooters: the XLR-H2 is a new unit built specifically for the FX5. The older XLR-H1 handle used on the FX3 and FX6 is not supported. The XLR-H2 also cannot be used at the same time as the optional OLED viewfinder, since both connect through the same MI Shoe.

      Removeable EVF

A 0.58-type, approximately 7.07-million-dot OLED removable EVF (the DVF-EL1) allows for clearer shooting in bright light when the rear LCD screen can be difficult to see. With a DCI-P3-equivalent color gamut, 10-bit display, and HDR monitoring support, this EVF will be a welcome accessory for one-man-band type productions or those that don't want to use an external monitor.
